Silly consumer ponderings

February 20th, 2008 at 03:28 am

While stabbing my knife viciously into the Parmesan cheese container on the side that doesn't have holes but is for pouring.. I pondered the question... has anyone ever used that side for pouring or you all do what I do and just to poke in a knife to break up the clumps so you don't waste any of the way too pricey pre-grated cheese?

Uh, I never buy parmesan that comes pre-grated in a jar....

I just give mine a few good shakes and sprinkle away...If it doesnt break up before the end of the container...I break up the remaining lumps at the end.

Love shredded parmesan on my italian dishes!!

Compulsive debtor, do you not use parmesan or do you prefer another form?

I'm tired of dealing with the clumps.

Oh yeah, I pour from the larger hole, but then in my family we can be heavy users of the cheese. Compulsive Debtor seems to be recommending purchasing your parmesan cheese in an ungrated hunk. The flavor is much BIGGER when you grate your own. Plus it will not have the cellulose or cornstarch additives that are meant to keep the pre-grated cheese in a can from clumping. We just use a hand crank grinder held directly over the food we want to cheese up.

I also don't use pregrated, I buy the hunks of parmesan cheese. We also use a lot of it.

I buy a big hunk of real Parmesean Riggiano (sp?). The difference in taste is incredible. You have to get the kind right from Italy, though. If it doesn't have "Parmesean Riggiano" stamped on the cheese rind, it's not the real deal. I have bought gigantic hunks of it at Costco, but it's not as good as the stuff I get at Whole Foods.
