Satellite Radio

August 6th, 2006 at 03:30 pm

I'm still in the middle of contemplating whether to get satellite radio (yeah yeah so much for being frugal). My car radio is on the fritz. I drive so much a radio in the car is not optional. The car radio on the fritz is what is prompting this.

The cost of the unit is pretty comparable (spend as much as you want for the toys you want), but there is a subscription cost. I'm not so fond of that part of it. However it would be nice to have no huge reception issues.

Looking at both services I'm more interested in XM radio than Sirus

You said your car radio was on the fritz, does that mean it doesn't pick up stations? Because I think XM runs through unused stations on the regular radio. Having problems with frequency may cause problems with the satellite reception as well. You might want to look into that before committing to anything. Otherwise, XM is great! good music all the time!

DH has Sirius and it is great... most of the time. Don't think you'll be giving up reception issues though! If you go through a tunnel - or even under a SMALL bridge - reception disappears briefly. Satellite is also affected by the weather - too hot or too cloudy. HouseHopeful is correct on one way to hook up satellite radio though - through unused stations. This can be an issue while traveling if the particular station you use is already in use. You just have to choose another station, that's all. I did just check with DH and there are other ways to hook up satellite radio. If you have a tape deck you can get one of those tape adaptors and use the line out on the satellite radio. Also, if you have an auxillary input on your radio you can run a line to that from the line out on the satellite radio. Also, if it's in the budget, spring for the home kit so you can listen at home too! We have our radio on the third floor of our condo and it has no problem transmitting to radios on the first floor. Good luck with whatever you decide!
