Now I think of it that was a dumb purchase

November 24th, 2006 at 04:23 pm

Ever buy something that seems to make sense as a purchase. And then realise that it wasn't that brainy?

I bought some precooked frozen organic rice from Trader Joes. Healthy, and convenient suckered me in. It has 3 packages of rice in there that just needed to be slit and then microwaved for 3 minutes to reheat. We had one and it was good and tasty, and oh so easy.

I saw it in the freezer last night and it dawned on me that I could just make up some rice, portion it out into zip lock bags and freeze it for quite a bit cheaper than I bought that rice for.

I only buy brown rice anyways so that isn't an issue. And I'm sure a bag of organic brown uncooked rice is a much better value than the precooked. And just as easy (its hardly difficult to make rice).

A lesson learnt.

Thanks for reminding us to think cos I do the exact same thing! I am going to look at the things I buy more carefully and see if there is a more frugal way.

i make rice and freeze it up too. what i've found the most successful is slightly undercook the rice and let it cool a bit. spread thinly on a cookie sheet and place in the freezer. stir occasionally so you don't get a big rice sheet! once frozen put the whole lot into a big baggie or container, and just take out how many cups of cooked rice you need.

Yummy, look at it this way, maybe you wouldn't have ever thought to pre-make and freeze your own rice if you hadn't bought the convenience rice. So you paid for the idea of making your own rice and not just the convenience rice, but in the long run you will now come out ahead. Paying for the idea to save you some money in the future doesn't sound quite as bad, does it? Okay, okay, justification, but whatever works, right?

Oh, most definitely yes. Dozens of times by now I'm sure. However, I'm trying to be good about all my purchases from now on. I usually have a one-week rule, where if I want something that's out of budget, even if I have the money for it, I have to research and think about it for at least a week before I can buy it.

Oh, and a great image there, by the way. Smile

Rice is one of the things I buy precooked. I have never successfully cooked rice. It is either mushy or munchy.

On cooking brown rice, try using a larger pan with less water. The rice comes out fluffy and does not spill over the edge of the pan while cooking. Oh, top the pan after the water, brought to a boil, calms down.

Speaking of freezing, it's almost winter Smile
