Cell Phone Quandry

April 5th, 2007 at 12:06 am

I keep thinking I should step up into the modern age and get a cell phone.

A few things so far have stopped me

1. Liking not having to be accessible to everyone all the time

2. The cost

3. The angst involed in choosing a plan (and then immediately finding a deal that would have been better)

4. Twenty years ago people who talked to themselves animatedly in public were thought to be crazy. Now they are hip and using a blue tooth. I'm too old to pass myself off as hip and I'm too young to be want to be seen as a crazy old lady.

So, so far I've stayed a luddite.

Don't do it! Resist the urge! I would do just about anything to be able to get rid of my "leash" but my work requires I have it. Plus, as the mom of a toddler in daycare, I need to be accessible at all times. But between my DH and I we spend over $100 per month for our phones. YUCK! There are a lot of other things I would love to do with the money...

LOL. I'm the other way around....I realized the other day that when I talk to myself, people now think I'm on the phone! Now, I can get away with it without as many funny looks.

    1. Just because you own a cell phone doesn't mean you need to turn it on (unless your job requires it).

    2. Just because you own a cell phone doesn't mean you need to walk around in public talking on it and, if you do, you don't have to use a wireless headset.

    3. Just because you have children doesn't mean you need to be accessible at every moment. We managed for many, many years without instant accessibility. I wouldn't leave my child with anyone who I didn't totally trust to handle any situation that might arise.

I have a cell phone. There are probably fewer than 10 people who know my number. I get very few phone calls as a result and I hardly ever make outgoing calls.

I have had one for going on three months. I drove a car that is 13 years old (almost) with close to 180,000 miles on it in a fairly rural area. Plus okay I was at the dog park for over 2 hours and my husband and all three grown daughters were freaked out because nobody knew where I was. I got the phone the next day. We got our bill today $78.03 with Verizon 700 anytime minutes nationwide.

You could always get a pre-paid phone, such as Trac w/limited minutes and only use it when you want to.

    1. You don't have to be accessible to everyone all the time. You don't have to give anyone your number if you don't want to. You can turn the ringer off, or the phone off, whenever you want to (like I do). The nice part is having it there when you want it or need it. It should be a convenient device for YOU, not for everyone else.

    2. It doesn't have to be expensive. You can get a pre-paid plan, or the cheapest plan, provided you don't plan on gabbing a lot.

    3. Research every plan available to you, narrow it down to two or three, ask people about the quality of service of their plans, and choose one. Sometimes cheapest isn't the best, because the service sucks and calls get dropped, etc. Lots of companies have information about their plans online.

    4. I hate the wireless headsets, and the people who feel the need to always talk on the phone in public. You don't have to do either! Smile

I think you can make it work for you in whatever way you want it to. I bought a cell phone six years ago and haven't had a land line since.
