How advertising portrays women

April 6th, 2007 at 04:47 pm

This video is absolutely riveting and has made me think about how adverting affects (or is that effects, I'm such a bad grammarian) society's values.

The video is about 1/2 an hour long. I was suprrised at how quickly the half hour went by and how interesting it was. Definitely worth the watch IMHO.

If you watch it I'd be very interested in what you thought of it.

I'm at work so I can't look at it. I just glanced the first 5 minutes, and I have a funny feeling that most ads are made by men (basically suggesting how women should think or how women are viewed).

This is very fascinating though. I'll have to watch the whole thing when I get home.

I finally got a chance to watch it now.

I find it most disturbing the concept of objectification and that it leads to violence. I don't disagree with it per se... just that I never thought of it that way. As far as I know, I also don't objectify women though. But again, this is about women in advertising.

Another thought I want to say about all this objectification is that... I think it could go both ways. I know she has mentioned this, but she didn't mention it in terms of money. In short, men sterotypically could relate in terms of wage earning, and how if we don't make enough, we are somehow less than desirable.

Even so, I agree with the speaker that the level of unfairness is much more acutely stacked against women than men. As time goes by, I believe that men will generally make more and more money as time goes by. Unfortunately, I do not believe that same concept applies to a woman's pursuit of beauty and age....

She's very humorous and engaging, not to mention being a superb speaker. I really appreciate you sharing this. I am certainly much more aware of the issue than before, and I hope more people will watch it.
